This afternoon 1F built bridges as part of their science lesson, designing them to see how much weight they could sustain before collapsing. Mrs Whitford took charge of the proceedings and working in teams of three, the children created some impressive designs. Competition was fierce but the enjoyment shared by all observing how much the structures could sustain was clear to see. After the experiment, the children completed their conclusions. Well done 1F!

With science coats, gloves and implements at the ready, Year 6 pupils experienced dissection in their biology lesson yesterday.

Mr Hawkins provided lamb hearts for those that wanted to participate. Similar to a human heart, the children learnt about the four chambers including the two atria and two ventricles and which chambers carry oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. The children were amazed that the heart was so small and yet did so much work.

In Form 1 the children have been furthering their historical understanding through a study of homes and how houses have changed over time. The children have learned about how certain property features became popular at various times throughout history, for example, thatched rooves, bay windows, decorative brickwork, window shape and frequency etc. This has complimented their work in Science relating to different materials and their properties. Armed with a toolbox of the features of different house styles through the ages, the children closely observed different houses and found evidence that may help age the house. After this practice, the children will similarly explore their own houses and attempt to estimate the date of their construction. Exceptions such as mock-Tudor features or new-build properties in the Georgian style have provided interesting discussion points relating to the reliability of historical evidence. Well done Form 1!

We’ve had some great Headmaster’s awards this term and today was no exception. Brume, Felix and Lexi had achieved something either very kind or creative and Mr Mobbs was pleased to acknowledge their efforts. The children helped to put their work on the awards wall in Mr Mobbs’ office where it will stay for the remainder of the term – well done!

Meanwhile, in the playground this morning, Mr Dammery’s Form 3 physics lesson was about light and shadows. He also helped the children use compasses to position their sundials in the right place to tell the time.
